OPINION: Behind The Scenes of Interviews – How To Perform
July 12, 2023
How to prepare for an interview is a topic that has already been covered extensively all over the internet. Even so, it can still be a risky experience for candidates without a good overview and the proper advice.
Let’s dive straight into the behind-the-scenes of recruitment interviews and learn how to leave a good impression that will certainly get you the job of your dreams.
Our Tips for Interview Preparation
While some of us may have no difficulty in doing interviews without getting nervous, some might need an extra hand. But with the right preparation (and our tips), anyone can successfully perform in a job interview.
- Use the STAR method (you can always check the details on various websites or even ask our friend ChatGPT), which ensures that your speech is concise and straight to the point.
- Practise with someone close to you during a recruiter-candidate role-play. It’s hard to get started, but it’s highly effective!
- Review your experience and areas of expertise both in the writing and the oral part. Can you describe them succinctly? Do the “one-minute” challenge: in one minute you have to give a light overview of your career path but be careful not to take too long!
- Prepare examples relating to the position for which you are applying to make your presentation more concrete.
- Find out information about the people you’re talking to (through LinkedIn profiles) and about the company (Google News) to show that you’re thinking ahead and that you prepared yourself.
And On The Big Day?
- Under no circumstances should you embark on a dramatic performance in which you play a role completely disconnected from reality. Prefabricated speeches can quickly be detected and ruin your interview.
- Make sure you adapt your dress code; for example, ties are ‘almost’ out of fashion. Immerse yourself in the company culture and get some information off the internet.
- I hear too many candidates openly criticizing certain ways of working, places, cultures, tools, etc. Wait a while before giving your precious opinion, at least before getting the job.
- Avoid repetition: Tics of language such as “so” and “yeah” can give a nonprofessional impression and some recruiters might be sensitive to this.
- Be careful with your posture and attitude, especially for jobs where interpersonal skills are required.
What Happens Next?
- A short, motivational email, restating the points discussed in the interview and expressing your desire to get the position.
- A reminder after a week or so to find out how the recruitment process is progressing. In this way, you remain in control of the recruitment process and emphasize your interest in the job position.
